Celia was the youngest daughter of Paul
Harvey
Deming Sr, and his wife, Helen Smith. She was educated at the
Spence School in New York City and the Masters School at Dobbs Ferry,
New York. As the daughter of a highly active businessman and
civic leader, she took her place in society, working as a member
of the Detroit Junior League, after making her debut in
1935. On 23 October 1940, she married William Wright Harts, Jr.,
son of General William Wright Harts, as the younger William's second
wife. Harts' first marriage, to dancer Lillian Emerson, had ended
in divorce in 1936. Though William and Celia would have two
daughters, this marriage would likewise end in divorce. On 27
March 1953, she married a second time, to Charles Sherwood "Sherry"
Munson, Jr, the son of a Connecticut businessman. A former
Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, Sherry's return to civilian
business life had been interrupted when he contracted polio in 1949,
costing him the use of his legs. Like Celia, Sherry had been
married once before, and had a daughter from that marriage. The
second try proved the better match for both Celia and Sherry.
They would have a daughter together, and remained devoted to each other
until Sherry's death in 1998. Her health deteriorated in her
final years, but she was able to spend most of this time at her home on
Jupiter Island in Florida.
