Paul Harvey
Deming Jr, the son of Paul H. Deming and Helen Smith, was born in
Detroit. Mary Sherman Mitchell, daughter of William Ledyard
Mitchell and Sara Moulton Sherman, was born in Cincinnati, and moved to
Detroit with her family in 1917. Neither family approved of the
relationship, and Mary's parents took her on a lengthy international
tour in the hopes that her attachment to Paul would fade. In the
end, the ploy was unsuccessful. The above photo is from their
wedding in July of 1939.
Mary died
just days after the birth of her second daughter as the result of an
excessive dose of medication wrongly administered in the
hospital. Paul was serving in the U.S. Army at the time of Mary's
death. Their children would be primarily raised by both sets of
grandparents. Paul never remarried, and died in 1982 of a brain
tumor.
