Henry Francis Le Hunte Lyster (8 Nov 1837 - 3 Oct 1894)


     The second son of the Rev. William Narcissus Lyster and Ellen Emily Cooper, Henry was born in Ireland while his family had returned to visit their old home in 1837. He attended the University of Michigan, receiving a B.A. in 1858, M.D. in 1860, and M.A. in 1861. During the Civil War, he served as regimental surgeon first for the 2nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and later with the 5th Michigan. He held the rank of Major of Volunteers. After the war, he established a successful practice in Detroit, being recognized as an eminent physician and surgeon. He was president of the Michigan College of Medicine. He was also Lecturer on Surgery (1868-69) and Professor of the Theory and Practice of Medicine and Clinical Medicine (1888-90) at the University of Michigan. He served as editor of the "Peninsular Journal of Medicine", was a prolific writer, a fluent speaker, and a member of many prominent medical associations. He was a vestryman for many years at Christ Church, Detroit, where his father had been the first rector. A window in his memory can be found at Christ Church. (Edward C Parker; H.L.L. Denny)
     In 1867, he married Winifred Lee Brent, daughter of the late Capt. Thomas Lee Brent and Jane Duncan Wilkins.
