The Lyster Window at Christ Church, Detroit.
Given in memory of Dr. Henry Lyster

This image from the Michigan Stained Glass Census, sponsored by the Michigan State University Library.

Ten members of the Lyster family are depicted, surrounding Christ in the center.  The two men in the left frame are the Rev. William N. Lyster (in the brown robe with the white beard), the first rector of Christ Church, and his son, Dr. Henry Lyster (with the brown hair and beard), in whose memory the window was given.

Since there are eight women and children surrounding Christ at the center, it seems very likely that one of the women is Dr. Henry Lyster's wife, Winifred, while the rest are Henry and Winifred's children, two of whom had predeceased Henry Lyster, dying in childhood.  Judging purely by apparent age, it seems a not unreasonable hypothesis that the kneeling figure in the left frame is Dr. Lyster's eldest son, William John LeHunte Lyster, while the boy standing next to him is most likely his brother, Henry Laurence Lyster.  The woman kneeling at Christ's right is probably Winifred Lyster, with Christ holding her youngest child, Thomas Lee Brent Lyster.  The two children in the lower right frame would then seem to be Eleanor Carroll Lyster and her deceased twin, Elizabeth.  The young woman behind them would be William J. L. Lyster's deceased twin, Lizzie Trowbridge Lyster, holding the second youngest of the Lyster children, Florence Murray Lyster.

The dedication at the bottom of the window reads - "1837 - In memory of Henry Francis Le Hunte Lyster, the beloved Physician and first Friend of many little children.  While I sojourned with you I sought light rather than darkness - 1894."

The window was manufactured in Germany, and installed at Christ Church in 1905.
