Born
in Co. Wexford, Ireland, as the youngest child of William John Lyster
and Martha Hatton, William Narcissus Lyster attended college in Dublin
and seminary in Edinburgh. Developing a passion for
missionary
work, he moved to the United States after being ordained an Anglican
priest, taking up the role of a traveling preacher in the rural
Michigan frontier, interrupted by a brief stint as the first rector of
Christ Episcopal Church, Detroit. Though the stay in Detroit
was
beneficial to his health, which he always claimed was quite fragile,
and to his finances, he could not bear being able to devote so little
time to the missionary work that was his true love. After
leaving
Detroit, he was to remain in Michigan, where he founded a number of
churches. He died in Mapleton, at the home of his nephew.
